Aula Bell was born in Kalvia, Finland. She received a B.Ed and M.A. in psychology and linguistics at the University of Victoria in 1970 and 1982. She taught for many years at Forest Park Elementary School in Nanaimo, promoting the use of phonemes as a tool to teaching reading skills.
