Friedmann, Gerhart Bruno

Gerhart Bruno Friedmann was born in Mannheim, Germany on January 10th, 1929 and grew up in India after his family fled the Nazis. He obtained a B.Sc. and an MA in Physics from Madras University (1947-1951) and a PhD from the University of British Columbia (1954-1957). In 1958, Friedmann began teaching part-time at Victoria College and working as a radiation physicist at the Royal Jubilee Hospital's Victoria Cancer Clinic. He was employed by the University of Victoria for 33 years and retired early in December of 1990. Friedmann's research accomplishments were in the areas of radiation physics and the application of physics to biological problems. Among the many committees on which Friedmann served were those on the proposed school of social welfare, on physical education and athletics, and on the place of professional schools. Friedmann's scientific and administrative talents were complemented by an interest in the arts, especially opera, film, and literature. He served on the executive of the Vancouver Island Opera Society, was a member of the board and executive of the Victoria Symphony Society, and participated for many years as a director of the Malahat Review. He was married to Margaret Friedmann, and had two daughters: Katheryn Anne and Alison Justine. Friedmann passed away suddenly in 1992 at the age of 63.

Friends of Ecological Reserves

The Friends of Ecological Reserves (F.E.R.) is a non-profit society registered in 1983 by the founder and current president, Lynne Milnes. Its mandate is “to promote the interests of the ecological reserves program in B.C. by raising public awareness.” It raises funds for “research in reserves, education, monitoring the management of reserves [and] leading field trips to existing ecological reserves.” F.E.R. works to establish new ecological reserves. Vicky Husband was president during much of the campaign for a proposed reserve of the Khutzeymateen River and its grizzly bear habitat. F.E.R. publishes a newsletter, The Log.

Friends of Mount Douglas Park Society

The Friends of Mount Douglas Park Society was formed in October of 1989 in reaction to the park's administration by the City of Victoria. One of the Society's first acts was to present strong opposition to the proposed relocation of Cordova Bay Road. Since its origins, the Society's focus has shifted from park boundaries to matters of park management including trail improvement, restoration projects, and human impact. The Society exists to advocate for Mount Douglas Park as a natural area and to encourage responsible use and enjoyment of the park.
