The University of Victoria’s Institute for Dispute Resolution was created on 1 April 1989 as a joint project between the faculties of law, education, and human and social development, along with other community organizations. Its original mandate was to 1) conduct research on dispute resolution 2) improve education and training in dispute resolution 3) promote the development of dispute resolution services and 4) enhance awareness of alternative dispute resolution procedures. The institute also founded a Master of Arts program: the MA in dispute resolution, which began in the summer of 1998. After two decades the Institute closed in 2010.
