Gary Peterson is a Kwakwaka'wakw and Namgis artist. He was born and raised in Alert Bay, B.C.

Peterson learned carving classes from Wayne Alfred and Beau Dick. He collaborated on the creation of a totem pole with Lyle Campbell and Luke Marston.

Newman, Carey

Carey Newman (1975-) is a Indigenous artist, carver, filmmaker and professor. His father, Victor Newman, is Kwakwaka'wakw and his mother is of English, Irish and Scottish heritage. His traditional name is Hayalthkin’geme.

Newman is best known for his installation "The Witness Blanket" which was made with over 800 items collected from residential school survivors. The installation was exhibited across Canada between 2016 and 2018. Newman has also created a 20 foot 2008 Spirit Pole and a commission for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.

In 2017 Newman was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and received the Order of British Columbia in 2018.

Newman is the current Audain Professor of Contemporary Art Practice of the Pacific Northwest at the University of Victoria.

Peterson, Andy

Andy Wilbur-Peterson (1955-) is a Coast Salish, Skokomish and Squaxin artist. He was born in Shelton, Washington and is a self-taught artist.

He began carving at age 18 and his designs are in Coast Salish style. He worked with Greg Colfax on a sculpture in 1987 and a totem pole in 1994-1995 with Steve Brown. He has taught many others how to carve and about Salish art and his work is found in collections internationally.

Child, Alvin

Alvin Child (1962-) is a Haida artist and member of the Tsawataineuk Nation. He was born in Alert Bay, B.C. and graduated from BCIT with an Engineering degree.

In 1984, Child began his artist career and studied art as an apprentice of John Livingston. Along with carving, Child creates and designs limited edition prints.

Whonnock, Sean

Sean Whonnock (1966-) is a Kwakwaka'wakw artist. He was born and raised in Alert Bay, B.C. and is the grandson of Gideon Whonnock.

Whonnock began carving at the age of 12, enrolling in a class taught by George Hunt Jr. He also studied carving with Simon and Beau Dick and Wayne Alfred. Since 1997, Whonnock has been carving at Thunderbird Park at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, B.C. His work has been featured in exhibitions in B.C. and has completed multiple wood carving projects with fellow artists. In 1999, Whonnock became Chief and given a new name, Ha'alux, by his family at a pole raising ceremony.

Sim, Ray

Ray Sim (1968-) is a Coast Salish artist. He was born in Vancouver, B.C. and has close familial ties to the Gitksan.

Sim was first introduced to art through attending a class taught by Roy Hamilton at age 11. He later took a class taught by Robert Davidson and now teaches classes himself at Ha-ho-payuk School in Port Alberni, B.C. and the Port Alberni Friendship Centre.

Sim's work consists of woodcarving of marks and bentwood boxes, as well as, paintings, prints and paintings on drums.

Parnell, Eric

Eric Parnell (1961-) is a Haida artist. He was born in Prince Rupert, B.C. and his family crest is the Frog.

Parnell is a self-taught artist and began creating prints and paintings in 2002. His work features Haida designs and includes a 7 foot Eagle painting commissioned for the BC Lions Children's charity.
