Pavelić, Tessa

Tessa Pavelic was born in Victoria in 1950 to Canadian artist Myfanwy Spencer Pavelic and her husband, Nikola Pavelic. Tessa had a disability and the Pavelic family moved to New York for her care and schooling sometime after the age of seven. The family spent their summers in Victoria at the Spencer family’s summer home, Spencerwood. After her schooling was complete, the Pavelics moved back to Victoria permanently in 1969. As an adult, Tessa worked as a teacher’s assistant at a play school. She lived at Spencerwood in a separate apartment. Tessa’s father Nikola died in 1996, and her mother Myfanwy died in 2007. Tessa died in 2009 at age fifty nine.

Nikola Pavelic was born October 15, 1906 in Zagreb, Croatia to Dr. Ante Pavelic and Olga Dosen. Pavelic held a Doctor of Law degree from the Sorbonne in Paris. In the 1940’s Pavelic lived in New York City and had an import-export business. In the late 1940s Pavelic met Canadian artist Myfanwy Spencer and they married in 1948. In 1950 Myfanwy gave birth to their daughter Tessa, in Victoria, B.C. Tessa was born with a disability, and the Pavelics moved back to New York for her schooling and spent summers in Victoria. They permanently moved back to Victoria in 1969. Two years later, the Victoria artist group the Limners formed; Nikola was the Treasurer. Nikola Pavelic died in December 21, 1996 in Saanichton.
