In 1959, Victoria College purchased the 120 acre Gordon Head army camp and adjacent property from the Federal Government. As part of the University of Victoria Gordon Head campus, the army huts were used as temporary and semi-permanent accommodation for classrooms and academic and administrative offices. In UVic’s early years, the Campus Planning committee and the Buildings and Grounds committee were responsible for renovating the existing buildings from the army camp and for the planning of new buildings.

From 1960-1965, the planning of the new UVic campus was controlled by the University Development Board which reported first to the Victoria College Council and then to the UVic Board of Governors.
