The collection consists of two letters from Belcher in 1855 and two from McClintock in 1869. The first Belcher letter is concerned with the Minie rifle, and the second with personal matters. The first McClintock letter is concerned with charts and exploration of the west African coast. He mentions Belcher in this regard. The second letter is about personal matters.

Admiral Sir Edward Belcher (1799-1877) and Admiral Sir Francis Leopold McClintock (1819-1907) engaged in Arctic surveys and were associated with the search for Sir John Franklin. Belcher commanded the expedition to search for Franklin in 1852 and McClintock discovered remains of the expedition in May 1859.
