History

Patricia Bates, nee Martin (1927-) is a Canadian artist and printmaker. Born in Saint John, N.B., she began studying art at Mount Allison University. She completed a Fine Art diploma in 1957 at the Royal Academie des Beaux Arts in Belgium and continued her studies at the Sorbonne in Paris.

Bates is known for her printmaking, especially her embossing technique. In 1965, she became a professor at the University of Victoria. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 1975 and has won many awards for her prints. Her work has been exhibits both in Canada and internationally. In 1994, she received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Victoria and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 2008.
