Biographical history

Margaret Thompson "Biddy" McNeill was born 3 March 1919. In 1941 she received a teaching degree from the University of British Columbia. While teaching school in Chilliwack she met William Henry "Bill" Gaddes (1912-2008) - the twin brother of musician Boyce Gaddes - whom she married in 1944. The couple had four children: Neill, Janet, Ann, and Sara. Shortly after marrying the couple moved to Victoria. While Bill worked as the chairman of the psychology department at the new University of Victoria, Biddy acted as a volunteer costume designer for UVic theatre productions from 1963 to 1970. She went on to do contract work as a costume designer for various Victoria theatre productions from 1970 until 1982.

Fonds consists of collages (watercolour and fabric) and drawings of costumes designed for the following UVic and community theatre productions: On Baile's Strand, 1965; The Player Queen, 1965; A Man for all seasons, 1965; Renaissance '65, 1965; Murder in the cathedral, 1966; Rhinoceros, 1966; Hadrigan VII, 1973; Old tomorrow: a saga of the CPR, 1973; The three sisters, 1974; The bartered bride, 1978; A Dicken's digest, n.d.; Ghosts, n.d.; Mrs. Alving, n.d.; a midsummer night's dream, n.d. Fonds also includes slides of 3 unidentified productions possibly depicting costumes designed by Biddy Gaddes.
