On February 8, 1966 the Senate approved in principle the adoption of a College system at the University to provide an intimate co-curricular environment for faculty and students, with curriculum and academic instruction remaining under Faculty and Departmental control. The system was intended to give students a greater sense of identity through close association with a fairly small group of students and professors, and through this association, derive maximum benefit from their studies. In 1968, Craigdarroch College was established; and in 1969, Lansdowne College was established. By 1972, there were approximately 300 residence and 700 non-residence students in both colleges.
