History
William Dumaresq received a B.A. and an M.A. from UBC in 1953 and 1961. He completed the course work for a Ph.D at the University of Toronto in 1957. While at UBC, he received the Macmillan Prize for Poetry (1953). He received a teaching fellowship at the University of Toronto for 1956 and 1957, and taught English at the University of Saskatchewan 1958-1960. He also gave a course in theatre at the Hammersmith School of Art (London) in 1966. In 1969, he joined the Gate Theatre Comany Limited, London. He has written poetry, prose, and drama - largely unpublished. However, some of his song lyrics have been published and he has also had some success with plays and films. Among his film credits are "The Mask" (1968), "The Slain Girl" (1968), "Duffer" (1970) [from his own novel], "Woman is Sweeter" (1970), "Cotton Comes to Harlem" (1970), "Fortune and Men's Eyes" (1971), "Rhinoceros" (1973) and "The Moon Over the Alley" (1974). Among the plays are "Who the Murderer Was" (1969), "Isabel's a Jezebel" (1970, 1971), "Beautiful Lunatics" (1972), and "Inventions of 1979" (1972).
