Everywoman's Books was established in 1975 as a non-profit collective to sell feminist literature and to create an impetus for political understanding and action. The store's first location at 2033 Oak Bay Avenue was chosen because of reasonable rent. Heather Hestler designed and created a stained glass sign that was intended to reflect the light and beauty of all women. In 1979, the store moved to Johnson Street, and in 1994 to its final location at 635 Johnson Street. The store closed in 1997 because of financial problems. On October 29, 1997, an auction was held to defray the bookstore's outstanding debts. The stained glass sign was auctioned to 90 individuals with the intent that the sign be preserved in the UVic Archives. The store was unique in Canada because it was the last remaining feminist bookstore that was run by an all-volunteer collective.
