History

Hugh Ernest Farquhar was born in Truro, Nova Scotia and was educated in B.C. He attended the Provincial Normal School from 1930-1931, and Victoria College from 1933-1934, received a B.A. (1938), M.A. (1955) and Ph.D. (1967) from U.B.C. He joined the faculty of the Provincial Normal School in 1948, was appointed to the Victoria College Faculty of Education in 1956, and continued teaching at the University of Victoria until his retirement in 1970. In 1960 Farquhar was appointed to the Victoria College University Development Board, and in 1963 he chaired the Committee on the Academic Future of the University of Victoria. After his retirement, Farquhar was asked to return to UVic as Dean of Education, 1971-1972, President, 1972-1974. Farquhar also served as Acting President of Notre Dame University (Nelson, B.C.) in 1975.
