History

David Griffiths was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of British Columbia and then moved to France, to complete his PhD at the Sorbonne in 1955. After his thesis was published in 1963, he returned to Canada to begin teaching as a Professor of French language and literature at McMaster University, Royal Roads and the University of Victoria, where he taught until his retirement in 1985. Throughout his career Griffiths wrote, published and contributed to publications on 19th century French literature, socialism and philosophy.
