History of Music in BC Research Project

Series includes 35 mm slides (negatives) of documents organized by location and/or subject. These documents were used a primary source material for the publication History of Music in British Columbia (1989), but only a fraction of the documentation appears in print. The collection, including a complete slide index, covers virtually all communities of any size in BC over the period 1850-1950, and sometimes beyond those dates. Series includes 35 mm negative film mounted in 2x2 slide holders, organized in plastic slide mounts, 20 to a page. Material consists of photographs or newspaper articles, programmes, photographs, and other documents collected in 1981-82 from communities across BC.
Each slide is identified by letter and number: A1, A2, etc. through H759 with 150 slides each in series A, B, and C, 999 slides each in series D, E, F, and G, and 759 slides in series H, for a total of 5,205 images.
The slides are fully indexed by place, subject, date, and description and the index is computer accessible. The index is located in Box 3.6-3.9.

Music and biographical subject files

Series includes files related to all three projects. Box 15 file 26 through box 16 file 47 are primarily biographical in nature; box 16 files 48 through box 17 file relate primarily to the 20th century. Each file consists largely of photocopies of retrospective material (although some is contemporaneous with the events) for the subject listed.

Photographs

This series consists of reproductions of photographs. Negatives (35mm) are included for many. Each file contains 1 or more reproduction(s) with the subject files often comprising more than a dozen. The series is arranged by location, individuals (i.e., portraits), and the Victoria photographs are arranged by subject. Photographs for which the provenance has not been possible are grouped in together with some negatives (others are located in the specific files), other illustrations, plus a series of remaindered
printed plates from A Documentary History of Music in Victoria: Volume I, 1850-1899 (1981). Items were collected from various museums and archives across BC as well as from individuals (the provenance of most items is indicated). Many of the Victoria items are from BCARS and the Victoria City Archives. The collection consists of more the 400 images.
