Else Lübcke Seel fonds

The fonds consists of birth and marriage certificates, household accounts and naturalization papers; diaries and notebooks kept by Else Seel, including prose fragments, poetry, notes, draft letters to and about Ezra Pound, and ideas for stories and poems; carbon typescripts of works by Jim Clark and H.E. von Wittgenstein; music and lyrics written by Seel and others; coloured drawings of Else Lübcke, Gloria Seel, landscape scenes and copy of Emily Carr's "D'Sonoqua"; correspondence with family, friends and fellow writers, including Ezra and Dorothy Pound; photographs and photo albums of Else Seel with family and friends in Germany and Canada; transcripts and carbons of Seel's prose work, including stories in German and variant drafts of "Kanadisches Tagebuch" (Canadian Diary), and book reviews written by Seel; transcript drafts of German and English poems by Seel and translations by Seel of other poems; transcripts and clippings of Seel's published poems and prose and reviews of her work; German books on history and literature, musical scores, audio tapes of works read by Seel and others, and tape of family gatherings; scrapbooks of visits to California and mementos of Victoria.

Denis Johnston collection

The collection consists of Johnston's second typescript draft (as finally rejected) of "Shadowdance", later called "The Old Lady Says No!", with holograph corrections by W.B. Yeats and others. Also included are photocopies of several early drafts of this play, including the aforementioned. In addition, there is the author's proof copy, with corrections, of "The Brazen Horn, Lenaea 5" (1968) [probably for 2nd ed. 1969, amended to Lenaea 6]. The collection also consists of correspondence from Denis and Betty Johnston to Bill and Mary Harbold from 1973-1982; a signed photograph of Johnston; photocopies of book reviews and book chapters re Johnston; a copy of Nine Rivers from Jordan with final corrections; and a copy of the libretto of Nine Rivers from Jordan.

The collection consists of correspondence from T. S. Eliot, photographs, a Lecture typescript with corrections, and an annotated book. The correspondence from Eliot is to: Mme. D. Bussy (including 1 unfinished reply and 2 from TSE's secretary) [1934-56]; Miss J.S. Bussy (daughter of above) [1939-56]; T. Tambimuttu [1959]; R. Thoma [1932]; M. Wykes-Joyce re Ezra Pound [1952] ; H.M. Belgion [1940-63]; Mrs. Harold Monro (Alida) [1934-60] including 2 photos; John Lehmann [1936-52]; Anthony Cronin [1958]; Francis Berry [1953] re Herbert Read. The typscript with corrections is TSE's lecture "From Poe to Valery". Also included is Herbert Read's The Education of Free Men (Freedom Press, 1944) with approx. 200 words of Eliot's holograph annotations throughout the text.

The fonds consists mainly of manuscript, correspondence, and photographs relating to the book "James Joyce in Paris: His Final Years". Included are a typescript "On Photographing Joyce" with holo. notes; Freund's photographs with a typescript list of those not included in the book; Carleton's typescript and her typescript translation of the preface; a dummy copy for the book; galley proofs; a paste up of the title page; and a few photos and sample text. Also included are: a newspaper account of the book in "Le Figaro"; a holograph preface written by Simone de Beauvoir; release letters from people included in the book, among them Henry Miller.

Robin Skelton fonds

The fonds consists of records produced by Skelton during the course of his life and career, documenting his activities as a poet, scholar, teacher, prose fiction writer, critic, editor and white witch. Records relate to activities including his co-founding of the University of Victoria Department of Creative Writing, his editorship of "The Malahat Review", his involvement with the Lotus Press in England and the Pharos Press and Sono Nis Press in Victoria, his collaboration with Ann Saddlemyer on the "Collected Works of J. M. Synge" and "The World of W. B. Yeats", a symposium and exhibition held in 1965 honouring the centenary of Yeats' birth, and his association with such writers as Wilfred Rowland Childe and Bonamy Dobree. Skelton's correspondents include T. S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, Robert Graves, Margaret Atwood, Earle Birney, Bonamy Dobree, Paul Theroux, Kathleen Raine and many others.

Audrey Alexandra Brown fonds

The fonds consists of manuscripts published and unpublished, which include juvenilia, poetry and story drafts, and the author's annual holograph gatherings of completed poems. The fonds includes public addresses, children's stories, periodical off prints, page proofs of A Dryad in Nanaimo, reviews, family and biographical items, photographs, certificates, recordings of poems set to music, a printers plate, biographical material, and correspondence. Correspondence includes 34 letters from former Prime Minister Robert Borden. Artwork often accompanies juvenilia verse and later children's stories; the media used include: ink on paper illustrations, pencil sketches, and watercolour drawings. Newspaper clippings include the author's columns, stories and poems. Also included are photocopies of 60 letters written by Audrey Brown to Professor Pelham Edgar (1929-47). The originals are in the Pelham Edgar collection at Victoria University, Toronto. The fonds also consists of: newspaper clippings and biographical material re Audrey Alexandra Brown and her family; correspondence between Brown and Pelham Edgar; correspondence between Brown and Earle Birney; correspondence from Martin Burrell to Pelham Edgar re Brown; manuscripts by Brown.

George William Russell collection

The collection consists mostly of correspondence from Russell about his social and literary activities. The vast majority of this correspondence is to William K. Magee. There are a few letters to Charles Weekes, Robert Graves, and Miss Buxton. In addition, there is a letter from AE's son Diarmuid Russell to Magee re Magee's proposed biography of AE and a photocopy of a letter (transcript) to Judge Richard Campbell from Dudley Digges re Campbell's broadcast "Farewell to AE". Other materials include a few clippings about AE (obit etc.) and an undated b/w photo of AE.

Cyril James Fox fonds

The fonds consists of four series:

Series 1: The Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) series is a subject file compiled and arranged by C. J. Fox related to the Wyndham Lewis biography his writing and his art. It contains photocopies of several Lewis manuscripts and typescripts (some unpublished) and correspondence, articles, clippings, lectures, obituaries, reviews on Lewis and his books. There are photographs of Wyndham Lewis and his art, and correspondence to CJF with Froanna (Gladys Anne Wyndham Lewis) and other writers: Richard Aldington, Roy Campbell, about T.S. Eliot with Valerie Eliot; photocopies of Ezra Pound's war letters to Lewis), V.S. Pritchett, Kathleen Raine, Martin Seymour-Smith and George Woodcock. Correspondence with other critics and editors include: Walter Allen, Elliott Baker, D.G. Bridson, Robert Chapman, Geoffrey Grigson, Frank Kermode, Hugh Kenner, Bernard Lafoucade, Jeffrey Meyers, Paul O'Keefe, Hugh Gordon Porteous, W.K. Rose and E.W. F. Tomlin. There are also correspondence with WL art collector: Walter Michel and WL book collector Hugh Anson-Cartwright as well as file on artist and friend of WL, Michael Ayrton. There is also correspondence, book reviews, clippings and photocopies about specific publications, such as The Art of Being Ruled, The Apes of God and the C.J. Fox edited, Journey into Barbary. This is correspondence with people who Fox contacted or collaborated with. There are files on some of CJF's Lewis-related activities, such as exhibitions and publications and on particular subjects such as Wyndham Lewis in Canada (which includes letters from Lord Beaverbrook, Paul Martin Senior, Alex Colville, A.Y. Jackson to C.J. Fox), Notting Hill Gate (the "Rotting Hill" exhibition on three great men), World War I and Vorticism.

Series 2: the General series consists of more subject files containing correspondence, typescripts, manuscripts, photographs and research material pertaining to the other authors in the collection: Richard Aldington (including RA correspondence with A.S. Frere (photocopies) and files on Aldington's relations with Hilda Doolittle and T.E. Lawrence. There is also CJF correspondence about Aldington with Norman T Gates, Alison Palmer, E.G Roberts and David Wilkinson. This series also includes files on other writers collected by CJF: C.M Doughty, Ford Maddox Ford, Paul Fussell, Germans (Ernst Junger and Gottfried Benn), Xavier Herbert, Samuel Hynes, Robinson Jeffers, David Jones (including correspondence with Kathleen Raine and Bill Blisset), Hugh MacDiarmid, Graham McInnes, H.L Mencken and Ambrose Bierce, C.E Montague, Lewis Namier, Donald Pearce, William H. Pritchard, Alan Ross, Edmund Wilson and David Wright with more extensive correspondence files between CJF with C.H. Sisson and Julian Symons.

Series 3: The Miscellaneous series consists of clippings, correspondence and other enclosures removed from the Fox book collection and several audio cassettes including Lewis's "Crisis" talk on BBC Radio, a BBC reading by Timothy West from Blasting and Bombardiering and a radio dramatization of The Human Age.

Series 4: Wyndham Lewis related drawings and paintings collected by C.J Fox consists of art work of Wyndham Lewis and Michael Ayrton and Robert Colquhoun collected by Cy Fox. Some are reproductions of book jacket designs, WL paintings and posters produced for Wyndham Lewis exhibitions. There are also two artefacts. WL's table and ash tray which are shown in WL painting of Ezra Pound.

The fonds also consists of material pertaining to The Percy Wyndham Lewis Exhibition at Rugby School; a photograph of Cy Fox; an obituary for Maisie Wyndham Neil; research files pertaining to Wyndham Lewis, Ernst Junger, Corinne McLuhan, Vorticism, and Ezra Pound; a promotional video for The Lion and the Fox Exhibition; material pertaining to the National Portrait Gallery exhibition "Wyndham Lewis Portraits".

James Brigham fonds

The fonds consists of correspondence, creative and academic working papers, and materials relating to Lawrence Durrell and his circle. In addition to Brigham's published and unpublished works, the fonds also hold unpublished materials by other authors. The Durrell-related materials include Brigham's partial reconstruction of Durrell's working library from his home in Sommières where Brigham visited him. The library was also reconstructed from Brigham's research at the Centre de Rechercher de Lawrence Durrell, founded by Francoise Kestman-Durrell, which has since been sold to l'Université Paris X in Nanterre. The fonds also includes a
number of photographs.
