Norman Alford fonds

The fonds consists of correspondence and drafts of Alford's critical works, including his biography of George Egerton (Mrs. Mary Chavelita Bright), Alford's Ph.D. dissertation on the Rhymers' Club, drafts of works on Stephen Hudson (Sydney Schiff), George Eliot, Aldous Huxley and A. Bronson Alcott; notebooks and journals kept by Alford, with holograph notes on his works of fiction and autobiography as well as fragments of stories; drafts of Alford's novel "A Garden Enclosed", drafts of short stories; and drafts of Alford's autobiographical works "In Pursuit of Any Arse", "Time Exposure", and "Travelling Hopefully: A Simple Record of Unsentimental Journeys to the Okanagan and Thereabouts, 1977-1978", including photographs; and correspondence with Howard Gerwing (UVic SC Librarian), 1984-1990.

Fonds consists of records of the Malahat Review (Issues 1 through 64) and includes typescripts of articles, short stories and poems submitted to the magazine; galley proofs, page proofs; minutes of meetings of the Malahat Review Editorial Board; general financial and administrative records relating to the magazine's founding by Robin Skelton and John Peter; correspondence of Skelton and Peter concerning submissions to the magazine, requests for submissions to special issues, the magazine's financial crisis in 1975 and appeals to subscribers for support; account books recording works submitted; photographs; press releases; newsclippings.

The fonds consists of records of Herbert Thomas John Coleman, including worksheets of his poetry and prose (also including two poems and an essay by his brother, Rufus Arthur Coleman); Coleman family photographs and negatives, financial records and certificates; correspondence from Coleman to other family members; scrapbooks of Coleman's poems, clippings and brochures; academic journals containing essays by Coleman and copies of Coleman's illustrated books for children, containing holograph inscriptions and extensive annotations.

The fonds consists of records of Rufus Coleman relating to his research on the works of John Townsend Trowbridge, including copies of Trowbridge correspondence, photograph of Trowbridge with Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), off prints of articles written by Coleman about Trowbridge, notes and copy of Coleman's Ph.D. dissertation.

The fonds consists mainly of manuscript, correspondence, and photographs relating to the book "James Joyce in Paris: His Final Years". Included are a typescript "On Photographing Joyce" with holo. notes; Freund's photographs with a typescript list of those not included in the book; Carleton's typescript and her typescript translation of the preface; a dummy copy for the book; galley proofs; a paste up of the title page; and a few photos and sample text. Also included are: a newspaper account of the book in "Le Figaro"; a holograph preface written by Simone de Beauvoir; release letters from people included in the book, among them Henry Miller.

The collection consists of correspondence from T. S. Eliot, photographs, a Lecture typescript with corrections, and an annotated book. The correspondence from Eliot is to: Mme. D. Bussy (including 1 unfinished reply and 2 from TSE's secretary) [1934-56]; Miss J.S. Bussy (daughter of above) [1939-56]; T. Tambimuttu [1959]; R. Thoma [1932]; M. Wykes-Joyce re Ezra Pound [1952] ; H.M. Belgion [1940-63]; Mrs. Harold Monro (Alida) [1934-60] including 2 photos; John Lehmann [1936-52]; Anthony Cronin [1958]; Francis Berry [1953] re Herbert Read. The typscript with corrections is TSE's lecture "From Poe to Valery". Also included is Herbert Read's The Education of Free Men (Freedom Press, 1944) with approx. 200 words of Eliot's holograph annotations throughout the text.
