The fonds consists of: 1) correspondence - mainly with fellow writers including Patrick Lane, Susan Musgrave, George Payerle, Robin Skelton, and George Woodcock and with publishers; 2) manuscripts - mainly of his own poetry, drama, and prose, including a BC Bibliography of Literature; 3) notebooks - in which appear ideas, diary entries, drafts of work, etc.; and 4) audio cassettes (not yet listed).

Fonds consists of correspondence, reports, clippings, photographs and hand-drawn maps that document Madsen's involvement in various environmental campaigns in the Okanagan region. Campaigns include: Bodega Head, 1962; Brent Mountain, 1961-92; Spotted Lake, 1978-89; Trout Creek, 1972-93; and Uranium, 1971-95. The fonds also includes several files on the Sierra Club, 1971-83; and the Okanagan Similkameen Parks Society, 1966-69; and 4 chalk drawings of landscapes.

The collection consists of the following files: Smiths research essay, Big sky, big mystery, 2001; Gordon Head Special W/T Station reunion planning, 2001; Research correspondence, 2001; National Archives copies of Department of National Defense documents, 1942-45; National Archives copy of Notes on the history of the Operational Intelligence Centre in Canada, n.d.; National Archives copies of photographs of Gordon Head Special W/T Station, the D/F Hut, and the Y Station.
The fonds consists of architectural plans of Samuel Maclure for homes in Victoria, other B.C. locations, and out of province locations, as well as lists of people who commissioned homes by Maclure, including construction contracts. Fonds includes plans by English designer George P. Bankart; plans by H. D. Day; plans by other architects; and watercolours by Maclure of houses, proposed houses and alterations. The fonds also consists of 8 negatives made from copies of original drawings of Hatley Park and 3 photocopies of sketches of a bungalow designed for Mrs. Maltwood.

The collection consists of Johnston's second typescript draft (as finally rejected) of "Shadowdance", later called "The Old Lady Says No!", with holograph corrections by W.B. Yeats and others. Also included are photocopies of several early drafts of this play, including the aforementioned. In addition, there is the author's proof copy, with corrections, of "The Brazen Horn, Lenaea 5" (1968) [probably for 2nd ed. 1969, amended to Lenaea 6]. The collection also consists of correspondence from Denis and Betty Johnston to Bill and Mary Harbold from 1973-1982; a signed photograph of Johnston; photocopies of book reviews and book chapters re Johnston; a copy of Nine Rivers from Jordan with final corrections; and a copy of the libretto of Nine Rivers from Jordan.
