The fonds consists of: 1) correspondence - mainly with fellow writers including Patrick Lane, Susan Musgrave, George Payerle, Robin Skelton, and George Woodcock and with publishers; 2) manuscripts - mainly of his own poetry, drama, and prose, including a BC Bibliography of Literature; 3) notebooks - in which appear ideas, diary entries, drafts of work, etc.; and 4) audio cassettes (not yet listed).

Raging Grannies of Victoria
The fonds consists primarily of drafts and research materials used to write his book "Frontier Theatre: A History of Nineteenth Century Theatrical Entertainment in the Canadian Far West and Alaska", published in 1982. Fonds includes musical scores and librettos, programs, photographs, scrapbook and four unpublished plays: "Murder Pattern," 1936; "Ascend as the Sun"; "Earth Song", by Herman Voaden; and "The Dragon", by Bertram Brooker.

Fonds consists of research materials, manuscript notes, correspondence, etc. related to the preparation of "A Shakespeare Music Catalogue", a multi-volume reference work which documents published and unpublished music written from Shakespeare's time to the present and related in any way to Shakespeare's life and works, and provides a selected bibliography of books, articles, dissertations, etc. on the subject of Shakespeare and music.

The fonds consists of manuscripts and typescripts of: Reference West Chapbooks and Hawthorne Anthologies; Reference West publications such as B.C. It also includes some manuscript/typescript material not included in the Chapbooks, together with some correspondence from a few of the authors.

Fonds consists of research files for his private consulting work, with some material by colleagues and students from the Centre for Public Sector Studies mixed in. Most of the files contain photocopies of studies and submission by native bands and organizations, government documents and reports, journal articles, brochures, and clippings. Many have been originally marked as attachments, but some of the number sequences are no longer complete. There are very few holograph markings or notes, and hardly any manuscript material.

Sous-fonds consists of records kept by Carole Itter documenting the life and death of her daughter, Lara Gilbert, Gilbert’s medical history, the publication of Gilbert's journals, legal trials submitted by Itter and Gilbert, and research on related topics chiefly from newspaper reporting and academic texts and journals. The sous-fonds has been arranged into five series: 1) cassette tapes, 2) I Might Be Nothing records, 3) legal proceedings, 4) medical records, and 5) clippings and research.
