Financial Records

Consists of accounting records; correspondence regarding share holdings; balance sheets; book inventories; financial statements; bank books; customs forms; accounts ledgers; cheque registers; cash books; B.C. Social Services Tax Forms; Revenue Canada royalty statements; corporate income tax returns; customs and excise forms; Unemployment Insurance Commission forms.

Administrative Records

Consists of mailing lists; files relating to promotion and advertising; records of authors' royalty status; correspondence between Gray Campbell and Tim Campbell regarding the latter's sales trips; other correspondence of Gray Campbell; copy of the McClelland and Stewart Brief to the Royal Commission on Book Publishing (ca. 1971); clippings.

Books

Consists of authors' typed and carbon drafts, often with holograph revisions; galley proofs and page proofs with holograph annotations; clippings; correspondence; promotional material, including publishers' blurbs and pamphlets; illustrations; photographs. Also consists of the same kind of material for works which were initially accepted but never published by Gray's.

Correspondence

Consists of correspondence with authors sending manuscripts to Gray's for consideration. Includes carbons of Gray's outgoing replies, reader's reports, and clippings. [Rejected manuscripts were in most cases returned to the author and have not been kept by Gray's]. Also consists of correspondence with book and magazine publishers, including Macmillan, Chatelaine Magazine, Peninsula Printing Co. Ltd. and the British Columbia Literary Quarterly, booksellers including The Book Nook and Borogrove Bookshop in Victoria, and the Library Development Commission, Vancouver. Also consists of correspondence with lawyers and accounts, including Clarkson, Gordon & Company, Chartered Accountants (Victoria) Pearlman & Lindholm, Barristers & Soliciters (Victoria), and investment dealers.

Statistics Canada

Consists of questionnaires and related material re. surveys conducted by Statistics Canada, including the Annual Census of Manufacturers, the Census of Merchandise and Service Businesses, the Canadian Crafts Survey and the Survey of Book Publishing in Canada.

Ephemera

Consists of guest book signed by attendees at publishing conferences and trade shows (1969-1973), and two greeting cards sent to members of the Campbell family.

Bankruptcy

Consists of past due accounts control sheets from Dun and Bradstreet (Vancouver), Commercial Collection Division; bankruptcy documents, including lists of creditors of other companies.
