Artist-Potter

This series consists of materials relating to Robin Hopper’s work as an artist. Records include ceramic glaze samples, slides, exhibition catalogues, sketchbooks, notes, awards, and inspiration materials. The series also includes two oversize wooden crates on wheels with wooden panels of glaze and colour test samples, as well as laminated poster versions of the panels.

Hopper was also the recipient of several awards. The series includes correspondences between Hopper and board members of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (N.C.E.C.A.), recommendation letters, exhibition catalogues, photographs and samples of Hopper’s work, and VHS tapes of the 25th anniversary of the Saidye Bronfman Award.

Author

Hopper was the author of books and magazine articles. He also produced videos in relation to his books. Series consists of manuscript copies and drafts, magazine and newspaper clippings, articles, correspondences, and research notes. The series also includes VHS tapes and DVDs of his video productions.

Garden designer

Series consists of slides with images of landscapes, buildings, people, and ceramics. Hopper’s interest in gardening developed in his teenage years. His long-term goal had been to develop a garden that would inspire his work as an artist and potter. Hopper and his wife, Judi Dyelle, took from Japanese culture in designing their “Anglojapanadian” garden at their property on Metchosin Road.

Instructor

For five years, Hopper taught at the college level in Ontario. From 1968 to 1970, he taught at Central Technical School in Toronto as the Head of the Ceramics Department. From 1970 to 1973, he set up the Ceramics and Glass Program and Department at Georgian College in Barrie. Hopper was also an instructor at Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in Victoria. In 1984, Hopper became one of the founding members of the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts (M.I.S.S.A.). The series consists of many of Hopper’s course outlines, along with slides and administrative and research notes.

Other papers

Series consists of materials relating to Hopper’s personal life, including slides of Hopper and his family, correspondences, and academic records. A 1968 certified copy of Hopper’s birth certificate is also included in this series (file 10.15).

Workshops and presentations

An itinerant lecturer and ceramic educator, Hopper delivered workshops and keynote presentations for forty years. He spoke in Canada, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Korea, the UK, and Israel. The series consists of his keynote addresses, notes, slides, and correspondences.
