Travel Diaries

The accrual consists of travel diaries (in French) documenting Jadin's travels through the Middle East and Far East, 1959, 1961, 1962, along with postcards, photographs, and ephemera of those and other travels.

"Shadowdance"

The file consists of Johnston's second typescript draft (as finally rejected) of "Shadowdance", later called "The Old Lady Says No!"

The accrual consists of correspondence from Denis and Betty Johnston to Bill and Mary Harbold from 1973-1982; a signed photograph of Johnston; photocopies of book reviews and book chapters re Johnston; a copy of Nine Rivers from Jordan with final corrections; and a copy of the libretto of Nine Rivers from Jordan.

Manuscripts

The accrual consists of two manuscripts:-- "The Fathers' Indian Mutiny Letters, 1857 - 1859" which consists of Xeroxed, typed transcripts of letters from J.H. Wyatt, writing from India, to his wife, Jane, "Jeanie" in Aberdeen. There are 77 letters plus a note: "Maude's Battery at the Relief of Lucknow 25 Set. 1857. By Lt. Col. M.E.S. Laws. OBE. M.C. R.A. (ret'd.) Taken from the R.A. Journal, July, 1953", 6 pp. The second is "Military Memories: Part I. First World War,1914-19; Part II. Mesopotamia, Egypt, Turkey, 1919-23; Part III. Royal Air Force, 1923-28; Part IV, Second World War 1938-1945 by W.F.A. Preston, Major late Royal Artillery, Newmarket, Ontario, 1965." 137 pp. Royal Military College and The University of Calgary Special Collections have copies of these manuscripts.

Shakespeare Volumes Annotated

The accrual consists of a three vol. set of Shakespeare's Works (J. Payne Collier, Lupton Pub. New York, n.d.) which Malcolm Lowry has used as notebooks, as well as for annotations on the texts themselves. These volumes, given by Lowry to his friend George Stevenson, were used as a resource by Lowry, especially during the composition of Under the Volcano. The volumes include poems and jottings by Lowry on fly leaves and paste-downs and on p. 944. In addition, textual annotations by Lowry occur most heavily in The Tempest, Merchant of Venice, Timon of Athens and, to a lesser extent, The Sonnets.
