Max Maynard fonds

Fonds reflects Maynard’s artistic processes and practices, his personal life, pedagogy, his relationships with friends, family, fellow artists, galleries and various institutions, as well as the activities of the Max Maynard Trust. The fonds consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, slides, contact sheets, negatives, notes and writings, and various ephemera.

Correspondents include Susan Witt, Marjorie Swann, Margaret Maynard, Rona Jones (Maynard), Paul Jones, Joyce Bethel (Maynard), Frederick Brand, Jack Shadbolt, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Winchester Galleries, Maltwood Gallery, and Bau-Xi Gallery.

The fonds has been arranged into six series: Personal documents, Correspondence, Photographs, Publications and clippings, Writings, and Max Maynard Trust.

The fonds consists of correspondence with George Woodcock, editor of "Canadian Literature" in 1971, re his submission of a review of Robin Skelton's poetry, plus a first draft of the review; correspondence with Rampant Lions Press (Will and Sebastian Carter), 1976-1977, regarding the printing of a collection of Hutchison's broadsides, plus copies of the broadsides; manuscripts, correspondence, artwork, notebooks, research materials and miscellaneous [This large collection (1996-020) is only roughly sorted and is on loan]. Notable correspondence includes George Woodcock, Susan Musgrave, Dennis Brown and the Rampant Lion Press.

The collection consists of photographs created from different processes between the 1870s and 1920s. The older photographs are mostly unidentified portraits with the more recent photographs including scenery and landscapes. Some of the locations photographed are identifiable and include Niagara Falls, Kamloops, Hamilton, Duluth, the Steamer United Empire, and Del Rio Orchard in Oregon. Also includes photographs and photograph albums illustrating historical photograph techniques, including daguerreotype, tin type, and albumen prints.
