Universal Penman Print

Title: "Universal Penman Print", Copperplate engraving, 62.5 x 40.7 cm *, June 2, c.1733-1741, George Bickham, Donor: Fred Salmon, "No. 30, [note on back], Study. Aristotle says, that to become an able man...Dictates of that Spirit which cannon lie. June 2. W. Clark Scripsit.", Original copperplate engraving from The Universal Penman, a 1743 handwriting anthology by George Bickham, English master scribe and engraver. Between 1733 and 1741 he engraved 212 such plates, representing the exemplars of 25 contemporary writing masters, like Joseph Champion (47 of the plates) and of Bickham himself (18 plates; this is one of them). This specimen of amazing craftsmanship was cut directly - without benefit of tracings - into the metal, and in reverse, to make the printed result readable. Note the slight embossing, indication the edges of the copper plate. Donated to the Fairbank Calligraphy Society by Fred Salmon, April 2002
