Sketchbooks and small works

Subseries includes Peterson’s sketchbooks, drawings and other small artworks, as well as a painting by Nita Forrest of Howard O’Hagan.

Biographical

Series consists of biographical files. Records include Peterson’s birth and marriage certificates, Canadian citizenship registration, US visa forms, medical documents, financial and tax documents, will and testaments, biographical notes, and various related correspondence.

Art practice

Peterson’s personal life and art practice were closely tied to one another. The art practice series reflects Peterson’s career as an artist as well as her personal life and includes: financial documents, receipts, contracts and loan agreements, forms and notes regarding exhibitions, grant applications, personal inventories and lists, diaries, notebooks, address books, drawings and small artworks, photographs, collected objects, various ephemera, and Peterson’s painting materials. Series includes five subseries: Sketchbooks and small works, Writing, Correspondence, Photographs, and Objects.

Writing

Subseries includes various writings by Peterson. Records include poetry, manuscripts, notes, notebooks and diaries.

Correspondence

Subseries includes correspondence between Margaret with family, friends, patrons and companies, and her love letters to Howard O’Hagan, as well as some correspondence addressed to Howard from friends. Records include letters, postcards, telegrams and invitations.

Publications, clippings and collected ephemera

Series consists of publications, clippings, postcards, and various writings by others collected by Peterson. Records include newspaper clippings, magazine articles, exhibition reviews, exhibition catalogues, Peterson’s high school yearbook, pamphlets, advertisements, and blank postcards collected by Peterson, as well as unpublished writings and dedications to Peterson by others.

Photographs

Subseries includes photographs of Margaret, her family and friends as well as photographs of her artworks, travels, and sources of inspiration. Records include photographs, negatives, contact sheets and slides.

Teaching

The teaching series consists of records documenting Peterson’s teaching activities at the University of California Berkeley. Records include rolls of students with grading, records concerning course materials, correspondence with faculty and students, and students’ exhibition catalogues as well as documents resulting from Peterson’s involvement in the loyalty oath controversy of 1949-1951, including notes, correspondence, and various manuscripts.

Howard O’Hagan Materials

Series consists of Howard O’Hagan’s family and personal documents that were donated with the Margaret Peterson fonds. Records include an interview with O’Hagan on audiocassette, correspondence, contracts and agreements, medical documents, clippings, photographs, manuscripts, publications, degrees, and various ephemera.

Objects

Subseries includes Margaret Peterson’s painting materials, as well as objects collected by Peterson, including rocks, and pre-Columbian and Inuit stone carvings.
