Name of creator
J.D. “Jim” Anderson is a former Parks Branch staff member and author of 'BC's Magnificent Parks; the First Hundred Years (Harbor Publishing, 2005). Anderson attended the University of British Columbia, graduating with a Master of Arts (Community and Regional Planning) in 1971. Anderson served as a Parks Planner with BC Parks between 1970 and 1977 and a manager in Resource Management with BC Parks from 1977 to 1980. He also worked with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and Fisheries Renewal BC between 1980 and 1998.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of records accumulated by J.D. Anderson that document various activities of the BC Parks system. Fonds includes primarily reports, correspondence, studies, and research materials, as well as audio interviews documenting the early development of Manning Park. This fonds contains records that document general information about the BC Parks system, including legislative materials, inventories, and ministry reports; materials that document the development of the BC Parks system more broadly, including records relating to the Protected Area Strategy and BC Forest Service; park-specific files including records relating to Strathcona and Great Bear Rainforest; administration materials; land trust and acquisition materials; modern context records, and records of the administrative activities that took place in Southern Chilcotin Mountains Park.
Immediate source of acquisition
The University of Victoria Archives acquired this collection through a collaboration with the Elders Council for Parks BC, a charitable organization that aims to engage retirees from BC's National, Provincial, and Regional Parks. You can learn more about the Elders Council for Parks on their website (http://www.elderscouncilforParks.ca/).
With few exceptions, the processing archivist retained the physical and intellectual arrangement imposed by J.D. Anderson, who compiled and selected these materials for donation.
