Biographical history

John Anthony (Tony) Connor is a British poet and playwright. He was born in Salford, Lancashire, England in 1930. He attended the University of Manchester where he founded the Peterloo Group of Manchester writers and artists with poet Robin Skelton and painter Michael Snow. Connor taught literature at Wesleyan University, Amherst College, and Bolton Technical College.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of correspondence and drafts of poetry, plays and prose providing a window into the professional life of Tony Connor. The fonds contains drafts of Connor's collections, including With Love Somehow (1962), Things Unsaid: New and Selected Poems 1960–2005 (2006), and The Empty Air (2012). Correspondence includes letters from Connor to academic Larry Vonalt and from Hungarian-British poet George Gomori.

The digital files consist of poetry drafts and are dated from 2007 to 2021 according to their "Last Modified" dates. Original​​ file ​​formats ​​include ​​.doc​ and .docx files.

Immediate source of acquisition

Gift of Tony Connor, 1971-2022. The digital files were received from Connor on one flash drive in 2022. Images of the drive were created to generate master preservation copies and to extract the content files.

Arrangement

The fonds is arranged into four groupings corresponding to the date Special Collections accessioned materials: I) 1996; II) 2009; III) 2014; IV) 2022.

Various acquisitions associated with the fonds have not been merged and organized as a whole. Each acquisition is described separately in the contents list below and titled according to year of acquisition.
