Alan Austin fonds

Fonds consists of records related to Alan Austin’s activities as an educator and phycologist, including materials generated through major research projects and student projects, arranged into four series: 1. Seaweed Inventory Project; 2. Victoria Phenology Project; 3. Teaching and student material; and 4. Aquatic ecology projects. The Seaweed Inventory Project (SIP), in particular, is a valuable, detailed record and baseline survey of a substantial part of the coastline of BC, and the vegetation and biota (thus measurable on a global scale) supported at the time of the surveys done in 1972 and 1974. These data stand as a permanent record against which any coastal changes can be compared and measured. The sedentary, attached nature of coastal biota makes it particularly responsive to, and thus a sensitive indicator of changes in their environment. Forces of change include oil spills, toxic spills, runoff from land developments, marina construction, and natural catastrophic events. Series 1 has been arranged into four sub-series: SIP reports; SIP films and photographs; SIP correspondence and field notes; and SIP reference literature.

Austin, Alan

Aquatic Ecology Projects

Series consists of data collected during field trips, and related essays and field reports relating to the study of aquatic ecology in the Capital Regional District. Dr. Austin conducted numerous aquatic ecology projects for his students, during which they collected field data and submitted reports and essays. Material is bound in the following volumes: Ashlee Bay; BC creeks and lakes; Bilston and Metchosin Creeks; Blenkinsop Lake; Colquitz; Colwood; Elk and Beaver Lakes; Langford Lake; Millstream; Ogden Point; Phelps Sewage Treatments Facility; Hartland Landfill; Scott’s Poultry; Swan Lake; Victoria area lakes and creeks; Victoria area marine ecology and miscellaneous. Series also contains reports produced under the direction of Dr. Austin for Butchart Gardens, Colwood, Tod Creek, Whistler and Metchosin.

The collection consists of ancient documents, including a cuneiform tablet and an Egyptian hieroglyph; Medieval and Renaissance documents from England, France, Spain and Italy, 1243-1599, including deeds, charters, illuminated manuscript leaves, letter, letters patent, papal bulls, fragments from religious manuscripts, manuscripts on medicine and magic, a catalogue of English armorial shields, statutes of the Garter, and a manuscript of a Spanish Armelite prioress; modern literary and political manuscripts, records, and autographs, including policies of assurance, letters, and World War I and World War II surrender documents; autographs of various world figures; maps of Europe, Asia and North America; medals, decorations, and flags, mostly from Europe.

The collection consists of records documenting various branches of the Canadian Army. Collection includes photographs of parades and drills taken by the Department of National Defence; photocopies of military order of the 1st Canadian Army during World War II; copies of intelligence tests administered by the Canadian Armed Forces; correspondence, maps, daily reports and copies of morale reports of the Canadian Militia Training Centre No. 111, Gordon Head Camp, together with some photos; booklet of poems by R.W. Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary's) fonds

The fonds consists of records of the Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary's). Primarily, the fonds contains the official war diaries kept by the regiment during World War Two. The diaries contain the daily logs, intelligence reports, orders, and newsletters, as well as records of individual experiences, of the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Battalions. A collection of maps and aerial photographs accompany these war diaries. The fonds also contains regimental records on training, dress regulations, personnel, the Bay Street Armoury, finances, and regimental correspondence. Additionally, the fonds includes the original manuscript and correspondence pertaining to historian Dr. Reginald Roy's book, "Ready for the Fray (Deas Gu Cath): the History of the Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary's) 1920-1955". Also included are the regimental publications, The Brazier, The Courtenay Camp Chronicle, and The Maple Leaf. The fonds is arranged into 22 alphabetically organized series consisting of records generated and utilized by the Canadian Scottish Regiment from its creation in 1920 to the present.

Hal Lawrence collection

The collection consists of audio tapes of 120 interviews that Lawrence conducted between 1980 and 1990 with naval personnel, several female officers and ratings. Fonds includes several interview transcripts, correspondence relating to one interview, a captain's night order book (HMCS Portage), and the text of an address. The additional fonds consist of manuscripts for books and articles written by Hal Lawrence, correspondence, clippings and photographs related to his navel career. The fonds also include personal and professional documents and correspondence, naval oral history material, several naval maps and transparencies, miscellaneous publications and ephemera. Katharine Maltwood fonds

Williston, Ray

Seaweed Inventory Project

Series consists of materials generated by the Seaweed Inventory Project, a major research project conducted by Dr. Austin and Robert Adams, research assistant and colleague. In 1972 and 1974, the project launched a survey of the seaweed along BC coastal waters. The series is complete record of the research project and includes original data, vegetation maps, reports, films and photographs, correspondence, field notes, reference literature, and other materials reflective of the activities of the researchers and project outcomes. Series consists of four sub-series:
