Administrative history

The Marine Science Vessel John Strickland was commissioned by the UVic Department of Biology to support the Departments marine science research and teaching. It was designed in 1973 by David I. Moore, Naval Architect of Vancouver, and built in 1975 by Shore Boat Builders (hull) and Philbrooks Shipyards (finishing). It was operated by the UVic Department of Biology from 1975-1988. Responsibility for the vessel was transferred to the UVic School of Earth and Ocean Sciences ca. 1988. It is currently operated by Western Subsea Technologies and berthed near the Johnson Street bridge in Esquimalt. With its shallow draft, the 16 metre vessel is suited for use in coastal water operations, and can accommodate up to 16 people.
