The ad hoc Organ Committee was established informally in January 1978 by Prof. Erich Schwandt, Professor of Music at University of Victoria, to assist him with the purchase of a 24 stop mechanical-action organ from the parish of St-Mathias, in Arvida Quebec, for installation in the University Centre Auditorium. The Organ Committee also included Prof. George Corwin (Music), Dr. Walter Barss (Physics), and Dr. Michael Ashwood-Smith (Biology). The organ was built for the parish of St-Mathias in 1966 by Georges Mayer of Sarre-Union, France, and was modelled on the instruments of the renowned 18th century Alsatian organ builder, Andreas Silberman. The organ was generously donated by Dr. Joyce Clearihue as a memorial to her parents, Joseph and Irene Clearihue, and became known as the Clearihue Organ. The inaugural concert of the Clearihue Pipe Organ was held on March 7th, 1981.
