Administrative history

The South Island Women for Economic Survival (SIWES) was a non-profit society. SIWES began in 1984 as a research and study project, led by Brishkai Lund. The project was concerned with how economic conditions affected women and their children, and research was conducted amongst low-income women of South Vancouver Island. The society voluntarily dissolved in 2005.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of general office files from 1984 to 2005; and includes minutes, official documents, correspondence, project files, newspaper clippings and publications. SIWES publications include : Women and Economic Hard Times ; Single Mothers on Welfare, The Trap we’re in ; Women, Poverty and Public Policy (1985) ; and Towards Women’s Equality in the Workplace (1993).
