Administrative history

The Victoria College Alma Mater Society (AMS) was established in the early years of Victoria College. When the University of Victoria opened in 1963, the AMS became the University of Victoria Alma Mater Society. In 1988, the name changed again briefly to the University of Victoria Student's Union, before being changed again in 1989 to the University of Victoria Students' Society (UVSS).

The UVSS is separate from the University and operates the Student Union Building (SUB), which houses several student run businesses. All undergraduate students at the University of Victoria are members of the Society. The UVSS is a social justice based non-profit that exists to provide advocacy, representation, services, and events for its members. It is governed by a democratically elected student Board of Directors, and works on issues affecting students, such as post-secondary funding, public transit, sexualized violence, campus sustainability, student employment, and affordable housing.
