History

The office of Public Relations and Information Services was established in 1988; the name was changed to UVic Communications in 1998. Previous to 1988, the function of information services was part of several departments, including: Media and Technical Services, 1974-79; Supply and Technical Services, 1979-82; Community Relations and Development, 1982-85; and University Extension and Community Relations. The Directors include: Evelyn Samuels, 1988-94; Ken Farris (acting), 1994-95; and Bruce Kilpatrick, 1995-present. Major functions of the unit include issuing media releases, advertising and videotaping special lecture series and events, and production of UVic newsletter, Around the Ring. Previous publications include: Gazette of the University of Victoria, 1963-1972; and Newsletter of the University of Victoria, 1965-72.
