History

The office of University Communications and Marketing manages UVic media, branding, and promotional activities. Major functions of the unit include issuing media releases, managing social media, advertising and recording the Lansdowne Lecture Series and other university events, production of the UVic newspaper The Ring (formerly Around the Ring), and, until 2023, administration of the Speakers Bureau.

The office was first established in 1988 as Public Relations and Information Services. The name changed to Communications and Marketing in 1998. The function of Information Services was originally part of several departments, including Media and Technical Services, 1974-79; Supply and Technical Services, 1979-82; Community Relations and Development, 1982-85; and University Extension and Community Relations. Previous publications managed by the department include: Gazette of the University of Victoria, 1963-1972; and Newsletter of the University of Victoria, 1965-72.
