Administrative history

The Victoria Family Violence Prevention Society (formerly Victoria Family Counselling for Men Society) provided counselling and treatment programs for men who were violent in their intimate relationships, and provided support for their partners, with the mission to stop the abuse of women by their intimate partners thus breaking the cyclic and the often inter-generational pattern of family violence.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of administrative and education program records. Materials include all annual reports; board minutes; service descriptions; some funding requests; several summaries of the history of the organization at points in time; research pertaining to effectiveness of the programs; studies and papers written by social work students and staff; submissions to government; educational and program materials for all program areas in the area of treatment programs for men, support groups for women, community education, materials used in prison settings; some other program and educational materials from other programs and research that helped to shape the agency programs. Descriptions of large community development projects initiated by the Society - eg: the Mayor's Advisory Group on the Prevention of Spousal Violence and Elder Abuse that led to the regional Violence Against Women in Relationships Coordinating Committee.
