Biographical history

W.R. Derrick Sewell was born in Rock Ferry, England. After obtaining a B.Sc. in geography and economics from the University of London in 1954, he came to the University of Washington at Seattle on a Fullbright Scholarship, and obtained his M.A. in 1954. After working as an economist for the Canadian government in Victoria, he returned to Seattle and obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1963. Sewell was appointed associate professor at the University of Victoria Department of Geography in 1966, attaining the rank of full professor in 1968. He served as Department Chairman from 1979 to 1984 and also served as Visiting Professor at universities in England, Australia, and the United States. During his career Sewell wrote more than 185 publications and served on several committees of the governments of B.C. and Canada, as well as various United Nations committees. In 1981, he was given the Canadian Geographers' Award for Scholarly Distinction.

The fonds consists of Sewell's correspondence, lecture notes, teaching materials, work as a Ph.D. student, drafts of papers, articles, and reports, published materials, collected research materials and unpublished academic papers, as well as personal documents including his curriculum vitae.

W.R. Derrick Sewell's research focused on topics of water sources, water management, environmental science, geography, renewable energy and water problems/crises, both in Canada and around the world. This is reflected in his publications and papers, as well as in the maps he collected.
